There's been a lot of hype in recent weeks in the media about the new Macbook Pro and iOS 6. From what we can tell, it seems to be a great machine. If you have the dollars, it's probably worth paying a little extra for. But keep in mind however, that the basic principles behind keeping such a mac clean, does not change. Sure it's the quickest Macbook ever and it has some great hardware features, but software hasn't changed to make it exempt from security issues.

It should be reiterated at this point that you need to keep your mac up to date with the best mac cleaning, virus protection and spyware software you can get. It's a very cheap price to pay for peace of mind. It will save you a lot of hassle in the future.

Here are some other routine maintenance tips for OS X without having to download or purchase software.

Error checking
You can run Disk Utility on external drives, then reboot into single user mode. Run fsck on the startup disk. We think this is worthwhile to catch any errors before they become an issue. If you don't do anything with such errors, they can escalate into problems that programs such as Disk Warrior can fix.

Defrag
Some people insist that defragging a Mac is not necessary. We beg to differ. Why would programs such as iDefrag be created if it weren't necessary from time to time? If your system is working well with nothing crashing, then leave it. But if things are going a bit slow, it's worth deleting Onyx and caches for example. Move files around using iDefrag and modify files (permissions repair). Basically anything that can increase the probability of data corruption.
